Remedy CEO steps down after FBC: Firebreak’s continued underperformance

Tero Virtala has left his position as CEO of Remedy Entertainment. He stepped down on October 22, 2025, after leading the studio since August 2016. While a permanent replacement hasn’t been named, co-founder Markus Mäki is now acting as interim CEO. Henri Österlund has taken over as chairman of the board.

Mäki expressed gratitude to Tero Virtala for his significant work leading Remedy since 2016. He personally thanked Tero for their positive working relationship and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Remedy Entertainment is undergoing a leadership change following a difficult year. Their attempt to shift towards a live-service model with the game FBC: Firebreak failed, as the game didn’t meet sales expectations and was generally unsuccessful.

Following a series of underwhelming results, Remedy recently announced that its profits for the year would be lower than previously expected, issuing a warning to investors earlier this month.

Remedy launched Firebreak on June 17th. According to their 2025 half-year financial report, initial sales of the game were lower than expected. The company quickly responded to player feedback and released several updates to improve the game. A major update, called Breakpoint, was released on September 29th, significantly changing the gameplay experience. While player engagement and sales improved after the update, they haven’t yet met Remedy’s internal goals, the company stated.

Although critics and players loved Alan Wake 2, the game didn’t sell enough copies for the studio to make a profit.
