Questlove says Common & Pete Rock got The Roots to finish their new album

As a gamer who’s been through countless levels of musical evolution, I can confidently say that Common and Pete Rock’s “The Auditorium Vol. 1” has been a game-changer. It’s like stumbling upon an old school arcade with modern upgrades – the nostalgia is real, but it’s also fresh and exciting!

Back in July of this year, the near-perfect album “The Auditorium Vol. 1” by Common and Pete Rock was released, achieving several noteworthy feats.

1. The album catered to the desire of rap’s older fanbase, as expressed on social media, by delivering an album rich in boom-bap beats, thoughtful lyrics, and mature themes.

Moreover, aside from the other effects, this album served as a catalyst for The Roots to finish their upcoming LP, which they haven’t produced since the 2014 release of “…And Then You Shoot Your Cousin“. In an episode of his podcast Questlove Supreme, the band’s drummer Questlove discussed it with Common and Pete, revealing that the album had ignited a wave of creativity in The Roots’ lead vocalist Black Thought.

“My band hasn’t been idle, observing all the commotion and it has certainly sparked something in us. I must admit, it’s inspired Tariq to an unprecedented degree – he composed an astonishing seven songs in a single day. That’s a feat we haven’t achieved since our second album,” Quest shared, using Tariq’s actual name.

I found some inspiration for our latest tunes after catching an episode of Roots this past summer. It sparked my bandmate’s creativity, and now we have some fresh, exciting music to share!

After our Hollywood Bowl performance, I believe it sparked something within Tariq. In the last fortnight alone, he’s produced around 80% of his work. You know, during the days of “Do You Want More?!!!??!”, ‘Riq was writing six to seven songs in a single session. This new album seems to be what he’s currently working on, and it’s quite inspiring.

Since they started performing as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2009, followed by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Philadelphia group has seen a decrease in the pace of new album releases compared to earlier in their career. Moreover, they tour less frequently now and have only managed to release three albums since taking up the TV job.

Since then, Black Thought has put out some fantastic albums, such as the three instalments of his “Streams of Thought” series and the outstanding collaboration album “Cheat Codes,” which he worked on with producer Danger Mouse.

In another part of the interview, Questlove mentioned that the upcoming Roots album is expected to release in 2025 – a highly anticipated event not just for their fans, but also for hip-hop enthusiasts as a whole.
