Questlove goes into fan mode after being tapped for De La Soul’s ‘Oodles of O’s’ video

As a fan who has been captivated by music since the 90s, I must admit that seeing Questlove in the video for De La Soul’s “Oodles of O’s” is an emotional rollercoaster. On one hand, it’s a testament to the power of music and how it can inspire and motivate people like Questlove to achieve greatness. On the other hand, it’s a reminder of the passing of time and the transience of life, as we lost Trugoy the Dove far too soon.

Despite achieving much in his professional journey, Questlove remains astonished to find himself among the star-studded cast in the music video for De La Soul’s 1991 hit “Oodles of O’s.

The video was filmed in July at De La’s temporary “Oodles of O’s” event, which saw visits from artists such as Common, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, Masta Ace, and DJ Tony Touch. In a subsequent post about the video, Q-Tip shared that this event inspired him to secure a record deal, a message he sent to his younger self.

In simpler terms, Quest Tuesday wrote on Instagram about time traveling to a past self who was 20 years old and telling them to remember the first song from an album that deeply moved them, causing them and their high school friend to consider getting a record deal. He then revealed exciting news that they would actually secure a record deal within two years! However, he advised his past self to be patient as true life-changing events will not happen until 31 years after this moment.

He joked, “It’ll only take you three whole decades, buddy… I know it’s a pain, but at least you’ll be there with us,” he went on. “Back in ’91, things weren’t as widespread, but let me tell you, after ’97? Everything started to shift dramatically… You wouldn’t believe the twists and turns that lie ahead for him!

Undoubtedly, many fans share Questlove’s excitement about the new music video for De La Soul’s song. However, given that group member David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur passed away in 2023 at the age of 54, it might be a mix of emotions for those watching.

In the music video for “Royalty Capes” by De La Soul, Jolicoeur mentioned that he had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and was required to use a LifeVest defibrillator device as a result, but the cause of his death remains undisclosed.
