Quentin Tarantino has spoken about the frequent focus on feet in his movies, and he rejects the idea that it indicates a “foot fetish.”
Quentin Tarantino is famous for featuring close-up shots of feet in films like Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but he recently told GQ he doesn’t really think about it.
You know, I’ve noticed something interesting while watching films by some of the greats. It seems like a lot of really good directors – people like Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock, and even Sofia Coppola – will subtly feature feet in their shots. It’s something people have pointed out, and honestly, I think it just shows a strong attention to detail and a really visual way of directing. It’s a little thing, but it definitely stands out!
Quentin Tarantino is known for including memorable scenes featuring feet in his films. Examples include a scene in Kill Bill where Uma Thurman’s character uses her foot as a weapon, and a conversation in Pulp Fiction about foot massages.
Margaret Qualley, who played a member of the Manson family in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was initially hesitant about a scene where her character puts her feet on a car dashboard. She jokingly told IndieWire she worried her feet didn’t look good enough and questioned director Quentin Tarantino about it. After talking it over with Tarantino and Brad Pitt, she agreed to do the scene, and later realized she could finally let go of her self-consciousness about her feet.
The amusing discussion about feet even became a moment at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards. While accepting his award, Brad Pitt playfully thanked “Margot Robbie’s feet, Margaret Qualley’s feet, Dakota Fanning’s feet,” a funny nod to director Quentin Tarantino’s habit of focusing on feet in his films.
Tarantino doesn’t seem to prioritize perfectly presented feet in his films. Instead, he uses them as a storytelling tool, often for comedic or surprising impact.
