Pusha T Says Drake’s UMG Lawsuit “Cheapens The Art” of Rap Beefs

Summary

  • Pusha T criticized Drake’s UMG lawsuit, saying it “cheapens” rap beefs
  • He revealed UMG dropped Clipse after he refused to censor a Kendrick Lamar verse
  • Pusha T believes the lawsuit is tied to past efforts to suppress his Drake diss tracks

Pusha T briefly commented on Drake’s legal dispute with Universal Music Group, asserting that such actions dilute the authenticity of rap rivalries.

To GQ for their latest Clipse album, Pusha T disclosed that they nearly omitted a Kendrick Lamar collaboration due to censorship issues with one of his verses. He said Universal Music Group (Def Jam’s parent label) demanded he remove the song from “Let God Sort Em Out,” but after refusing, they threatened to drop the Clipse and him. After a month of not complying, Pusha T stated that Steve Gawley, their lawyer, told them, “We’ll, just drop the Clipse.” Later, GQ confirmed Def Jam did indeed cut ties with both the Clipse and Push.

Push asserted that the current situation was strikingly similar to 2018 for him, recalling a similar reaction when he spoke out near individuals linked to Drake after the unveiling of “Story of Adidon.” This included collaborations like Rick Ross and Lil Wayne’s “Maybach Music VI” and Pop Smoke and Young Thug’s “Paranoia.” He suggested that if Drake was eager for a legal battle, it was likely because he was aware of the actions taken to suppress everything related to ‘Adidon,’ including verses, records, and events from that period.

He went on to say, “I no longer respect him. The legal disputes are more significant than trivial rap issues. frankly, I don’t hold you in high regard. It’s almost as if the value of the art is diminished when we have to address serious questions about lawsuits and court cases. It’s just inconceivable, for something like this?

As a gamer, let me put it this way: Push made it clear he won’t jump into any rap beef between him and Drake unless he feels like it. He said, “After all that’s gone down, I don’t see any more subliminal messages to be made ever again, not just in music, but in life too. Honestly, I was in Canada for a show, and I made it home safely. So, I can’t even focus on any of that drama. I danced my heart out, and I ain’t gonna mince words about it.
