As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I approached Primal Survivors with a sense of anticipation, having enjoyed some of Afil Games’ previous titles like Mighty Mage and Stickman’s Arena. However, after playing this latest release, I must admit I was left feeling underwhelmed.
Last week, Afil Games introduced a new installment in their twin-stick shooter series called “Primal Survivors.” This latest release builds upon the foundation laid by previous games like Mighty Mage and Stickman’s Arena. Developer Antonio Filipe continues to deliver games at an impressive pace, leading some to question the focus on quantity over quality. Primal Survivors can be categorized as a horde shooter, sharing similarities with Vampire Survivors, but on a smaller scale.
Similar to Vampire Survivors, Primal Survivors enables you to progress and pick one out of three power-ups at every instance. Initially, you can opt for either a rock or a bone as your weapon; however, the rock is the more favored option due to its superior statistics.
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must admit that I found the control setup of the latest game I played to be truly exasperating when it came to aiming at enemies. It wasn’t just a matter of pointing and shooting like in most games – no, this one required me to use the right stick to aim precisely at my foes, all while holding down the zR button (R2 for those unfamiliar with PlayStation terminology). The frustration didn’t end there, though.
Every few minutes, a new adversary emerges, with one of three bosses appearing every five minutes. Rounds typically last for 15 minutes and present an easy challenge. The standard foes don’t pose much danger as I managed to complete an entire round without being hit once. Even the bosses seemed glitchy. During my first encounter with the wasp boss (the first boss), it became stuck behind a tree, rendering it immobile and easily defeated in a short time. The mammoth and monkey are entertaining alternatives, but they don’t present any significant challenge or add much value to the gameplay experience.
From a visual perspective, the images are quite poor and max out at a very low resolution, giving them a pixelated appearance. Towards the end of the game, there was a weapon that could be unlocked, but unfortunately, it came too late for most players to find it engaging. This feature lets you automatically shoot at the nearest enemy, similar to Vampire Survivors. However, due to its late introduction in the game, many players may lose interest before they even reach this point.
On my Nintendo Switch, I managed to complete the game and earn almost all of its achievements. However, Xbox and PlayStation users can achieve all but one of these feats with just one playthrough. The sole achievement titled “Die 15 times” necessitates additional attempts for unlocking it.
Primal Survivors is available now on PC, Steam, Switch, Xbox and PlayStation.
Primal Survivors (Nintendo Switch) Score: 5/10
As a longtime fan of Afil Games, I’ve grown accustomed to their consistent release of new titles. However, with “Primal Survivors,” I can’t help but feel underwhelmed by the title itself. It seems like just another addition to their ever-growing library, lacking any unique selling point that would make it truly stand out.
