Pokémon TCG Pocket is finally fixing its trading system

After much anticipation, the long-awaited update for the trading systems in the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket has been rolled out, following a less than favorable reception when it initially launched due to player feedback.

On their official Pokémon website, The Pokémon Company recently announced an upcoming update for Pokémon TCG Pocket set to release on July 29, 2025. This update will significantly revamp the trade functionality within the game. Essentially, they’re planning to replace the current system with a more player-friendly one altogether.

The fundamental shift revolves around getting rid of trade tokens within the game, a currency once employed for trades but hard to acquire in-game. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a consistent or dependable way to earn these tokens; they were mostly distributed through events and promotions. Additionally, the cost of trading certain cards using these tokens was excessively high, making it difficult for players.

Starting July 29th, Shinedust – a readily obtainable resource – will grant players the ability to trade cards of 3-star, 4-star, and special rarities. Cards with lower ratings can still be traded for free as usual. However, cards above this rarity, along with promo cards and shiny cards, won’t be tradeable just yet.

In the upcoming update, players stand to receive twice as much Shinedust for opening card packs containing cards they already have in their collection. At present, a modest quantity of Shinedust is awarded for such instances.

Players can swap their existing trade tokens for Shinedust an infinite number of times, as well as acquire up to 60 pack hourglasses through exchange. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

1. Trade Tokens: You can swap these tokens you already have for Shinedust. There is no limit to how many times you can do this.
2. Pack Hourglasses: You can also trade your tokens up to 60 times for pack hourglasses.

During this period, starting from July 24, 2025, trading activities will temporarily halt so that the new system can be smoothly installed without any complications.

It’s quite possible that the trade update will be released together with a fresh Pokémon TCG Pocket set, given that the timing aligns with the regular monthly schedule for new releases since the game launched. Players are eagerly anticipating a standard-sized, multi-booster expansion, following the release of the previous two expansions which were limited to single boosters.
