Pink Floyd Co-Founder Slams Angelina Jolie and Other Celebrities for Supporting Ukraine

Roger Waters, who used to be the lead singer of Pink Floyd, has publicly criticized several famous people for their support of Ukraine. He claims they don’t understand the history of the region or the reasons behind the conflict with Russia.

During an interview with RIA Novosti on Thursday, Roger Waters called out several celebrities by name, including Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn, Bono, and even a former member of his band, David Gilmour.

Waters believes that actions taken by Western countries played a role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and he feels many celebrities lack understanding of the situation. He specifically criticized Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn, Bono, and David Gilmour, stating they are unaware of key historical context, like the role of James Baker.

Waters pointed to promises made by NATO to the Soviet Union in 1990, arguing these were Western commitments that weren’t kept.

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters is known for speaking out about world events. In 2023, he spoke to the UN Security Council, where he denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but also faulted Western policies for playing a role in the conflict. Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, dismissed Waters’ speech as Russian propaganda, referencing the title of Pink Floyd’s famous album, ‘Another Brick in the Wall’.

Waters criticized Angelina Jolie’s trip to Kherson, implying she lacked understanding of the war’s complexities and history. He stated, “I’m certain Angelina Jolie has no real knowledge of this situation,” particularly referencing her visit to a maternity ward to support those affected by Russian attacks.

Roger Waters, the founder of Pink Floyd, claims Angelina Jolie’s trip to Ukraine suggests a lack of understanding of the situation, mirroring what he sees as a general ignorance among celebrities. He also points out that these visits come with substantial fees, and reports suggest Jolie’s last trip was quite expensive.

While Roger Waters voiced criticism towards certain celebrities, David Gilmour responded differently. In April 2022, he released a Pink Floyd song called “Hey Hey, Rise Up!” which included Ukrainian musician Andriy Khlyvnyuk.

The money raised went to help people affected by the crisis, and Gilmour told The Guardian that many Ukrainians didn’t realize their situation was being covered in international news. He also mentioned his own family ties to Ukraine, explaining that relatives had directly experienced the effects of the war.

Pink Waters’ recent statements have sparked a renewed discussion about whether celebrities should get involved in international conflicts, and whether public figures have a duty to fully grasp complicated political situations before expressing an opinion.
