It wasn’t clear how exactly James Gunn and David Denman, known from Brightburn, would reconnect in Peacemaker until the start of season two. DC Studios didn’t disclose the role Denman was taking until the show aired. Now it’s clear why they hid the details. The sudden appearance of Denman’s character resulted in a significant emotional event for one of the main characters.
In the finale of season two of “Peacemaker,” Christopher Smith stumbled upon a startling revelation. On a frosty night, he decided against letting Eagley fly out. Instead, John Cena’s superhero revealed a hidden portal to the Quantum Unfolding Storage Area, a vast, otherworldly room accessed through a secret door from season one. Inside, Smith witnessed an alien from another dimension enter and exit. However, when Eagley refused to return, Smith embarked on a search for him. His journey led him to a rack of Peacemaker helmets placed near the entrance of one of the QUSA’s numerous doors. Intrigue overcame him, and he decided to try his own passcode. To his surprise, it was valid, leading him to a mansion where he briefly entered before fleeing upon seeing that his father, Auggie, was still alive in a friendly guise.
Towards the end of the show, a drunk, drugged, dejected Smith returned to the parallel world. He delved deeper into the mansion and eventually moved onto the porch. Soon, a truck arrived, and out stepped a tall, commanding figure – none other than his older brother Keith, now fully grown.
In an alternate universe, Cena’s Smith brotherly bond was tragically shattered when, under the cruel entertainment of their father – a white supremacist – they were forced to engage in bare-knuckle fights as children. Contrastingly, in this other world, Auggie was a kind and loving father who raised well-respected sons who later formed the popular and admired superhero team called the Top Trio.
In my movie-loving enthusiasm, I found myself utterly floored when I encountered my long-believed deceased brother alive! Peacemaker, that’s me, couldn’t help but stay and converse with this miraculous family reunion for an extended moment. Frankly, it wasn’t easy to fault him.
In a universe where even my hardened father had softened into love, and Keith – the brother I idolized as a kid, still stood tall – it was difficult not to be swept away by emotion. My brother, you see, introduced me to the world of heavy metal that resonated so deeply with me. Even during our unfortunate brawl, there was an undercurrent of fun between us.
I must confess, my fight with Keith wasn’t out of genuine aggression; it was fueled by my father’s encouragement. I never intended to deliver the fateful punch that inadvertently led to his devastating seizure and ultimate demise.
Chris continues to be deeply affected by his brother Keith’s passing, as he feels a sense of lingering sorrow and a heavy burden that stems from his father’s failure to accept responsibility. Instead, his father placed blame on the young, tormented Chris, who was left reeling from the tragic event. However, this loss served as a catalyst for change in Christopher’s life. He vowed to ensure no one else would suffer such an avoidable death and dedicated himself to the pursuit of peace. In this quest, he pledged to take action only when it served the greater good – acting in the name of peace.
In my world, at least as I understand it, Auggie and his gang were valiant champions. They battled tirelessly for the benefit of all, embodying the ideals of Peacemaker – a man who willingly stands side by side with his elder brother in combat.
In another realm, Peacemaker – once thought alive – now regrettably breathes no more. The Top Trio, unaware of this change, remains as a duo, though the situation may be uncertain. It’s possible that in some universe, a forlorn, solitary hero exists, yearning for family love. Unbeknownst to him, his brother, the very connection he craved, was recently found through a mysterious portal between worlds.
It’s no surprise that DC Studios and James Gunn chose to keep David Denman’s character under wraps. The introduction of Keith Smith was a potent, emotional scene that might not have been as impactful if we had anticipated it. This revelation will influence the entirety of Peacemaker season two significantly. Much like how there’s only one Christopher Smith left, there’s now just one Keith – both unique in their respective roles.
