PEACEMAKER Season 2 Introduces Batman Villain White Rabbit into the DCU

In the initial episode of season two for Peacemaker, John Cena’s main character ventures to a clandestine location within an abandoned toy store. His purpose is to try out for inclusion in Maxwell Lord’s Justice League, which was previously featured in Superman. However, his audition doesn’t unfold as he had planned. Yet, there was a delightful DC reference hidden in that scene. Essentially, “Easter egg” is the perfect term to describe it. In the tryouts, a character dressed in costume exits with tears streaming down their face, and this character happens to be relatively unknown from Gotham City – White Rabbit.

Actress Brey Noelle portrays White Rabbit in a manner remarkably similar to her comic book version. She dons provocative “Playboy Bunny” lingerie, complete with oversized rabbit ears. Despite not having any dialogue, she conveys distress, possibly due to something said by Guy Gardner. It appears that this character may not make the team roster, but interestingly, she does have roots in DC Comics.

The character known as White Rabbit debuted in issue #1 of Batman: The Dark Knight (2011), which was written by Paul Jenkins and illustrated by David Finch. This appeared during the publisher’s controversial New 52 relaunch that same year. Her real name was Jaina Hudson, who was the daughter of a prominent Gotham City diplomat and his wife, a former Bollywood star. At age nine, Jaina relocated from India to Gotham, eventually rising as a wealthy socialite and briefly dating Bruce Wayne.

It was discovered that she possessed the ability of Cellular Fission, enabling her to create multiple copies of herself, akin to a prolific bunny. Over time, her White Rabbit persona evolved into a Caucasian and platinum blonde version, raising some concerns due to its sexualized nature. On several occasions, she created issues for Batman. Later, she became a member of the Wonderland Gang, fitting in well due to her character inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Despite merging back with Jaina, the White Rabbit persistently resurfaced in various parts of the DC universe.

In the world of comics, White Rabbit is typically portrayed as a foe rather than an ally for Batman, unlike characters such as Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy who transitioned from villains to more complex roles. It’s possible that White Rabbit could follow a similar path in her career. In fact, her depiction in comics from 2023 suggests a potential change. However, she didn’t gain the same level of popularity as other female characters known as “Gotham City Sirens.” More recently, her costume design has become less suggestive.

It’s highly probable that the White Rabbit character from Peacemaker was only intended as a brief joke and won’t appear again. However, since anything can happen in this new DC Universe, there’s always a chance James Gunn may decide to develop her role further as the season progresses. Some lesser-known Batman villains have gained prominence due to their appearances outside of comics, such as Kite-Man and Condiment King. It’s possible that Peacemaker could elevate White Rabbit to a similar status in the future.

Peacemaker season two drops new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
