PEACEMAKER Reveals the Quantum Unfolding Chamber’s Origin

In the fourth episode of Season 2 of Peacemaker, an unresolved enigma from the previous season gets addressed, while a thematic inconsistency is also resolved. The episode begins with a pre-credits flashback set 35 years ago, where Robert Patrick portrays Auggie Smith, wearing a black mullet wig, along with his two boys, Christopher and Keith, on a hunting trip in the woods close to home. Mistaking it for an animal, Auggie shoots something. However, upon closer inspection, he realizes it’s a small, injured alien entity.

In my own words,

As a young Chris, traumatized by witnessing something terrible, pleads with Auggie not to repeat the action, Auggie disregards his request and strikes him. He then harshly orders Chris not to interfere. In a brutal display, Auggie destroys the already injured alien’s head. It is at this moment that we learn about the Quantum Unfolding Chamber’s door hidden in the woods. Additionally, Auggie leaves behind a mysterious metallic artifact, which later becomes crucial in developing the Peacemaker equipment. This incident reveals how this sophisticated technology, coveted by every major government agency decades later due to its advanced nature, found its way to Earth. Sadly, such was the callous and prejudiced actions of Auggie Smith.

In the first season, it was never clarified how the White Dragon, a seemingly ordinary white supremacist criminal living in an ordinary house, managed to engineer such technologically advanced portal to other dimensions within his bedroom closet. Creator James Gunn presented this as a humorous aspect, which somewhat eased our concerns about its plausibility. However, it was evident that he intended for us not to overthink the matter. The high-tech chamber was essentially used for narrative purposes. Yet, as the series progressed, it became increasingly challenging to brush off this inconsistency.

In our ongoing inquiry, here are some unanswered queries: To begin with, how did Auggie Smith from the alternate universe locate his Quantum Unfolding Chamber? Despite appearing kinder and gentler, he doesn’t seem capable of constructing one alone. Was there a significant hunting expedition in his world that led to its discovery? Or was it uncovered some other way? The alien who perished may have been the creator, but it’s also possible he merely utilized it like others did. We eagerly await the revelation of these details.

In this episode, we’re particularly pleased that James Gunn clarified the plot device regarding Auggie Smith in Peacemaker. Throughout season one, Auggie was portrayed as a hateful and uneducated bigot. The idea that he might secretly be a brilliant scientist capable of constructing a portal to different dimensions and keeping it at home sends a problematic message. People like Auggie don’t possess some hidden depth of knowledge. Chris Smith even dismisses the suggestion by Leota Adebayo, reminding her that his father at best only had a sixth-grade education. Individuals like Auggie aren’t operating on a higher level; they are bigots with limited understanding of basic literacy and probably not quantum physics. We’re glad that Peacemaker chose to debunk this notion.

Peacemaker season two drops new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
