In James Gunn’s portrayal of the DC Universe, renowned urban centers such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago do not feature. Instead, cities like Metropolis, Coast City, and Gotham City appear. However, in the second season of Peacemaker, another significant DC Comics city was mentioned, which strongly suggests one of DC Comics’ most iconic characters. This city is Blüdhaven, and its protector is Nightwing. When Peacemaker encounters a doorway to an alternate reality where his brother is still alive, he remarks, “Shouldn’t you be in Blüdhaven?” If this city exists in the alternate reality, then it likely also exists in Peacemaker’s world.
In simpler terms, the mention of Blüdhaven in the DC Universe indicates that Nightwing, a well-known and beloved hero of DC Comics, who typically resides near Gotham, may be present in the latest version of the universe. This reference could suggest that Nightwing exists within this new DC Universe.
Blüdhaven was introduced in Nightwing #1, back in 1996. This is where Dick Grayson, Batman’s former Robin, moved to escape the limelight of his mentor. Originally thought to be situated between Gotham and Atlantic City in New Jersey, this city was originally a whaling town, predominantly settled by German immigrants. On Peacemaker, they pronounce the city’s name using Germanic phonetics as “blewd-hayven.” However, the majority of DC fans pronounce it as “Blood-haven,” which sounds more ominous and fitting, unlike a drink you might find at Oktoberfest.
numerous Gotham City criminals, driven away by Batman, established their operations in Blüdhaven, with Blockbuster being one of the most notorious figures. Over time, Blüdhaven has become even more plagued by crime than Gotham, although its criminal element tends to be less affluent. Given the high number of criminals, Nightwing frequently finds himself busy. It was in Blüdhaven that Dick Grayson served as a beat cop and later established a foundation to aid the city’s underprivileged residents. He also chose Blüdhaven as the base for his own superhero group, the Titans.
Does this imply that Nightwing is already part of the DC Universe and Blüdhaven has its own superhero guardian? It’s uncertain, but it’s no longer unimaginable given the upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold film. Director James Gunn hinted that the Bat family would be involved in the movie, potentially including Nightwing as well. If Bruce Wayne is old enough to have a teenage son Damian Wayne as Robin, it’s possible he’s also old enough to have adopted Dick Grayson as his first Robin, who could now be an adult and possibly Nightwing.
In the forthcoming animated film, titled “Dynamic Duo,” we follow the adventures of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both originally known as Robins in the DC Comics universe. Whether or not this movie is set within that same universe isn’t clear yet. However, if it does happen to be, then it could suggest that Nightwing, Dick Grayson’s alter ego, already exists there. Fingers crossed that the mention of Blüdhaven implies we’ll see the former Robin soon in James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. It’s been a while since we last saw a portrayal of Dick Grayson on the big screen, with Joel Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin” being the last time. Here’s hoping this iconic character gets a well-deserved cinematic reboot soon!
