Diane Keaton, the beloved actress who won an Academy Award and starred in classics like Annie Hall, has died at the age of 79. Her family confirmed to PEOPLE that she passed away in California on Saturday, October 11th. She was known for her enduring appeal, distinctive fashion sense, and impressive work in film.
Diane Keaton began her acting career in Los Angeles and became well-known in the 1970s for playing Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather movies. She continued to star in many beloved films, including Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, First Wives Club, and Something’s Gotta Give. Keaton won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for her performance in Annie Hall, and received three additional Oscar nominations throughout her five-decade career for her roles in Reds, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give.
Even though Diane Keaton has had a successful career in Hollywood, she considers being a mother to her adopted sons, Dexter and Duke, her greatest achievement.
Dexter Keaton White
Dexter Keaton White was born on December 15, 1995, and is Diane Keaton’s oldest adopted child. He married Jordan White in June 2021, and Diane happily danced with him at the wedding, wearing her trademark white pantsuit and hat.
Dexter frequently expresses her love for her mother on Instagram. For example, in a 2014 Mother’s Day post, she shared how grateful she was to have been adopted by such a wonderful woman, thanking her for everything and professing her love.
She also posted old childhood photos, including one with her brother Duke, and jokingly noted her mom often went barefoot. Dexter often shows his support for his mom’s work online, such as promoting Keaton’s book, Fashion First.
Duke Keaton
Duke Keaton, born on February 8, 2000, is the second child adopted by Diane Keaton. He’s a creative individual with a love for music, and recently released his own song, “Passenger Princess.” His website describes him as a rising American talent with a Hollywood background.
In 2022, Diane wished her son, Duke, a happy birthday on Instagram, adding a red heart emoji to her post. Duke often accompanies his mother to movie premieres and other events. A photo from 2009 shows them both enjoying a Los Angeles Lakers game, sharing a laugh from their courtside seats.
