Original, Unaltered STAR WARS Gets Limited Theatrical Release in 2027

Get ready to see the original Star Wars movie – including the famous Han Solo and Greedo scene – back in theaters! For years, fans hoped this might happen, and now it’s confirmed: the 50th anniversary release will be George Lucas’ original 1977 cut, which hasn’t been shown commercially since 2006. After more than forty years, the original Star Wars is returning to the big screen for a limited time, starting February 19, 2027. This release is happening almost thirty years after the successful theatrical debut of Star Wars: A New Hope: Special Edition.

For months, there have been whispers online about a possible return to theaters of the very first Star Wars film. This started when a beautifully restored print of the original movie was discovered and shown in the U.K. last year. It’s likely this is the same version we’ll see in cinemas, though it may have undergone even more restoration for wider release. For years, George Lucas maintained he’d never release his original cut, believing it wasn’t his ideal vision. He even used the tagline “The original, one last time” when the trilogy was released on VHS in 1995. However, it seems that might not have been the final release after all.

Originally, the re-release of Star Wars was scheduled for April 30, 2027, but it’s possible that date refers to a different cut of the film. The announcement details a limited theatrical release of a newly restored version of the original 1977 Star Wars. A version of the film that predates A New Hope might come out in February, and the Special Edition could follow with a wider release, as it’s better suited for IMAX. Either way, this is huge news for Star Wars fans – we’ll finally get to see the classic film as it was originally released, the way audiences first experienced it. Stay tuned for more updates, because something big might be coming…
