‘One Punch Man’ S3 Director Quits Social Media After Fan Backlash Turns Toxic

The premiere of One-Punch Man Season 3 has sparked a lot of online debate, largely due to disappointment with the animation. The negative reaction has been intense, and unfortunately, director Shinpei Nagai was forced to delete his X (formerly Twitter) account after receiving significant harassment from upset fans.

Before deleting his X account, Nagai said he was leaving social media due to increasing negativity and personal attacks he was receiving.

He explained that some fans had misinterpreted his previous statements, which harmed both his own image and the reputation of the animation team at J.C. Staff. He also said the amount of negative online reaction had become too much for him to cope with.

Nagai requested his involvement as director for Season 3 of One-Punch Man not be revealed until the premiere was nearer. But after the news became public, many fans criticized him, faulting him for what they considered poor animation and a lackluster production.

Even though Nagai tried to address questions and calm people down, he still received a lot of online anger. This led him to first lock his account, and then ultimately delete it.

He shared his disappointment on October 21st regarding the negative response from fans after the second episode. He explained, “It’s upsetting to see supportive fans who were excited get angry and feel betrayed when things don’t meet their expectations.”

The director also spoke out against online users who try to upset or offend anime creators, pointing out that making anime is complex and affected by things like limited budgets and tight deadlines.

He acknowledged the staff’s dedicated effort, noting they were working diligently despite challenging circumstances to achieve the best possible results.

It’s natural for fans to be disappointed when a long-awaited series doesn’t live up to their hopes. However, it’s never okay to harass the people who created it. Animators and directors work incredibly hard, and constant negativity only harms everyone involved.
