Nintendo unveiled a multitude of exciting prospects for its followers during the special edition 2 of Switch Direct livestreams. This includes revivals of classic GameCube games and an exclusive game from FromSoftware set for release next year. Furthermore, the console was finally revealed in full detail after initial hints in January.
Fans’ enthusiasm for the new Nintendo console wasn’t the only feeling circulating, as many were taken aback by the high price tag. The projected U.S. retail price of $450 for the Nintendo Switch 2 represents a 50% increase compared to the 2017 launch price of the original Nintendo Switch. Considering inflation, the actual rise is about 15%, but it seems that many fans weren’t expecting such a price hike, as the post-presentation discussion on Treehouse Live was filled with requests for a price reduction. Some analysts initially speculated that this higher cost might be due to tariffs, but Nintendo recently informed IGN that this is not the case.
Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. won’t begin on April 9, 2025. This is because they want to evaluate potential tariff effects and changes in market conditions first. They will announce a new start date later. The initial launch date of June 5, 2025 remains the same.
It’s reported that other markets are not experiencing issues due to pre-order delays, as Nintendo works out the best strategy to manage recently announced tariffs. As Forbes reports, Nintendo has been moving a significant portion of its Switch production from China to Vietnam in anticipation of potential tariffs on Chinese goods. However, unexpectedly, Vietnam was hit with a planned 46% tariff while China now faces a new planned 34% tariff.
Might the cost of the Nintendo Switch 2 increase significantly in the U.S.? The future is uncertain given our current unique circumstances, so let’s wait and see how things unfold. Keep an eye on our updates as we anticipate further news from Nintendo.
