Nia DaCosta, director of “The Marvels”, has once more attributed Marvel Studios as a significant factor in the movie’s challenges. This time, she specifically highlighted the script as an area that may require improvement.
It’s common knowledge that Marvel typically works without a fully completed script, as confirmed by Feige for their upcoming blockbuster film, “Avengers: Doomsday.
What did Nia DaCosta say?
While talking about the sequel to 28 Years Later, Bone Temple, she mentioned Marvel.
In an interview with THR, DaCosta shared that working on the sequel to “28 Years Later” was one of the most rewarding filmmaking experiences for her. She mentioned that one challenge she faced with “Candyman” and “The Marvels” was the absence of a robust script, which can greatly disrupt the entire production process.
Past Comments on Working With Marvel
DaCosta previously went so far as to say The Marvels wasn’t even her movie.
She stated that the film is produced by Kevin Feige, essentially meaning it’s his project. Given this, she implied that you might be accustomed to certain aspects being prominent, but she approached it acknowledging that some parts may have less focus.
As thrilled as I was to be a part of Marvel’s grand universe, it ignited an even stronger desire within me to concentrate on crafting my own unique cinematic tales.
Leaving The Marvels During Post-Production
It became a topic of discussion about her involvement in the problematic production as news broke that DaCosta departed from the film during post-production to take on another project. Prior to wrapping up “The Marvels,” she had already moved to London to prepare for “Hedda,” a drama featuring Tessa Thompson.
When a director is overseeing a film with a budget of $250 million, it’s quite unusual for them to depart just a few months before the completion of the project,” a source reportedly said to Variety in 2023.

In terms of box office performance, “The Marvels” stands as the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), raking in approximately $206.1 million worldwide. Unfortunately for Disney, this underperformance is estimated to have cost them a significant loss of around $200 million.
It’s also the least-watched MCU movie on Disney+.
