As a long-time Swiftie who has followed Taylor’s career since her humble beginnings, I must admit that I found the NFL’s birthday gift to be a bit cringe-worthy. Don’t get me wrong; I love seeing my favorite pop star interacting with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, especially when it comes to football. But the song choice was just off the mark.
Clearly, the video was designed to benefit Taylor Swift, given that she recently celebrated her 35th birthday on Friday. Being a die-hard football fan herself, Swift is globally recognized, making her an attractive figure for promotional purposes. The NFL capitalized on this by creating a special birthday video featuring Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, a player with the Kansas City Chiefs. This move was intended to spark conversations about Swift, but also to boost the NFL’s own popularity as they thrive on publicity.
As a devoted Swiftie myself, I must admit that the montage was undeniably heartwarming! It was truly special to see such a significant sports entity honoring one of Taylor’s idols. To many of us, she is simply unparalleled in her talent, so it feels only right that she receives this tribute.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it wasn’t just the heartwarming moments between Swift and Kelce that made me raise an eyebrow with the NFL’s gift. It was the song choice that left me scratching my head. The track they went with was a cover of “All of Me” by Toby Gad and Celina Sharma, which felt a bit off-theme for the occasion.
NFL delivers Taylor Swift a cringe-worthy birthday gift
If the league had opted for Legend’s initial, less ornate design instead, it might have been acceptable. However, the current cover appears excessively saccharine, and playing it during intimate moments between a couple feels intrusive and uncomfortable. The fact that this video is being produced by a professional football league adds an unsettling element to it.
It appears we often forget that although Swift and Kelce are well-known personalities, they are individuals with feelings just like us. Their relationship isn’t for public consumption; it exists independently of the spotlight. Regrettably, the NFL seemed overly eager to invade their private moments, even adding a football twist.
Instead of focusing on the videos, it was the song that truly mattered; if a different melody had been selected, perhaps AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, the NFL might have opted for this choice purely to avoid appearing derivative and unoriginal. In future instances, they should simply stick to football matters.
