Paramount recently decided to cancel a fourth Star Trek movie starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock. However, they’re still planning new Star Trek films. According to Deadline, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will be writing and directing a completely new Star Trek movie, separate from previous storylines. Daley and Goldstein previously directed the well-received Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for Paramount, and also directed the comedy Game Night and wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming, so fans are looking forward to seeing their take on Star Trek.
The New Star Trek Movie Will Be a Fresh Take
The upcoming Star Trek movie will be a fresh start, completely separate from any of the other Star Trek films Paramount has tried to develop over the last ten years. The last installment, Star Trek Beyond, didn’t perform well in 2016, and several subsequent movie ideas were never approved. This new film will feature an entirely new cast of characters. Based on the work of the filmmakers involved, it’s likely the movie will be funny, similar to their Dungeons & Dragons film, though it probably won’t be a straight-up comedy. Unfortunately, it probably won’t be released until after 2027, meaning it will miss Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary.
We Thought Paramount Would Reboot The Next Generation, But We’re Glad They Are Being Bold
We’re really pleased that the next Star Trek movie seems to be introducing new characters. We thought Paramount would likely stick to what’s safe and reboot Star Trek: The Next Generation using the same timeline as the recent films – and that could still happen eventually. However, we’re hoping this new film will feature a completely new Enterprise and take place many years after the adventures of Picard and his crew. It would be amazing to jump ahead a hundred years and see the Enterprise-J exploring a Star Trek universe unlike anything we’ve seen before. Also, while we’d prefer a more creative title, we wouldn’t be surprised if they simply called the movie Star Trek, similar to the recent Halloween films.
For now, we don’t know much more about this new movie. But watch this space (the final frontier).
