New Report Reveals Massive Budget Behind Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of Christ

Mel Gibson is making a grand return to telling stories from the Bible, and it appears his new project is even more ambitious than previously thought.

Recent reports indicate that “The Resurrection of Christ” will be released as two movies, with a total production cost exceeding $250 million. Each film is expected to cost around $125 million to make. Lionsgate is funding the project and intends to release both parts in high-quality theaters, including IMAX.

People involved with the film say it’s expensive because of extensive visual effects and a complex story. Reports indicate the movies will feature epic scenes with angels and demons, dramatic spiritual conflicts, and a depiction of Jesus going into hell. Mel Gibson has even called the project a “mind-bending experience,” suggesting he intends to create visually and thematically striking films.

Mel Gibson’s upcoming film about the resurrection of Christ is set to be a large-scale production, comparable to the blockbuster film Avengers: Endgame. Reports indicate a budget exceeding $250 million, spread across two parts, each costing around $125 million. This high cost is due to extensive visual effects, filming with IMAX cameras, and ambitious scenes depicting battles between angels and demons.

The first part of the movie will be released in theaters on March 26, 2027, with the second part coming just a few weeks after, on May 6, 2027.

Following his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson returns with the second movie in a planned three-part series. He directed the film and collaborated with Randall Wallace on the screenplay, which was based on a story developed with his brother, Donal Gibson. Gibson is also a producer on the project, alongside Bruce Davey.

The entire cast has been replaced with new actors. Jaakko Ohtonen, a Finnish actor known for his work in “The Last Kingdom,” will portray Jesus. Mariela Garriga will play Mary Magdalene. Kasia Smutniak will play Mary, Jesus’ mother, while Pier Luigi Pasino will be Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio will play Pontius Pilate. Rupert Everett also joins the cast, though his role hasn’t been revealed yet.

It was previously announced that Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci wouldn’t be back for the project. By October, it became clear that the entire original cast had been replaced, mainly because of difficulties scheduling everyone and the expense of making them look younger using special effects. The casting of Ohtonen caused some online discussion, and Smutniak also received criticism from certain groups due to her previously expressed political opinions.

I’m so excited to share that filming started on October 6th! They’re shooting primarily at the amazing Cinecittà Studios in Rome, but they’re also planning to film all over Italy. What’s really ambitious is that they’re filming both movies simultaneously! We originally heard the budget was around $100 million, but it looks like the total cost for everything is going to be significantly higher. It’s a big project, but I can’t wait to see it all come together!

This film is a remarkably ambitious and large-scale project for a faith-based movie. Gibson has taken a significant risk with this production, and it’s expected to generate a powerful response from audiences when it’s released.
