Universal Pictures confirmed today that a new “Miami Vice” movie is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027. They’ve begun casting actors and plan to start filming next year.
Joseph Kosinski, the director behind popular films like *F1: The Movie* and *Top Gun: Maverick*, will direct a new take on *Miami Vice*. His version will explore the vibrant and risky atmosphere of 1980s Miami.
This film is based on the original pilot and first season of a beloved TV show that had a huge impact on popular culture, inspiring trends in fashion and filmmaking. It will also be filmed in the immersive IMAX format.
Dylan Clark, the producer of The Batman, is also producing this movie with Joseph Kosinski. The script is by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, and it’s inspired by characters originally created by Anthony Yerkovich, who also served as an executive producer alongside Michael Mann.
The iconic TV show *Miami Vice* ran on NBC from 1984 to 1990, featuring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives working undercover. They became well-known for their distinctive pastel suits. Creator Michael Mann once said the show aimed to be a completely new approach to television.
While there was a *Miami Vice* movie released in 2006 – directed by Michael Mann and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell – this is a new film. The previous movie grossed $163.7 million globally.
The upcoming movie aims to recreate the look and feel of the original show, but with a fresh, modern cinematic approach thanks to director Joseph Kosinski.
