As a diehard film fan, I’m thrilled to share that DC Studios has unveiled an exciting new promo starring none other than Hawkgirl! The buzz among fans is palpable as this iconic character gears up for her big-screen debut in “Superman,” hitting theaters on July 11, 2025. This movie marks the beginning of a fresh DC Universe, and it’s masterminded by the brilliant James Gunn, both writing and directing the project. It’s an exciting time to be a DC fan!
In the movie, Isabela Merced portrays Kendra Saunders, better known as Hawkgirl. This character is not your average superhero; she’s equipped with wings for combat and wields weapons as part of a team of superheroes called the Justice Squad. What sets her apart is that she’s actually a reincarnated alien who retains memories of her past lives, lending depth and emotional complexity to her persona.
Merced discussed how the movie skillfully mixes seriousness with laughter, as she pointed out.” or “According to Merced, the film effectively combines gravity with humor, she noted.

Merced additionally mentioned that at 5 feet 1, she is shorter than many of the other DCU heroes, which adds to her uniqueness. She had previously portrayed Anya Corazón in Madame Web, an experience that aided her in readying herself for this part. However, she chose not to disclose this during auditions for Superman out of fear they might not want her to play both roles, which she later confessed.
In 2022, Gunn commenced working on the ‘Superman’ project, and shortly afterward, he teamed up with Peter Safran as co-head of DC Studios. Initially, the movie was to be named “Superman: Legacy,” but that particular title segment was removed in early 2024.
The filming process started in Svalbard, Norway before transitioning to Georgia and Ohio. The majority of the significant work was completed at Trilith Studios in Atlanta. As per the updates, production came to an end in July 2025.
David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent (also known as Superman), while Rachel Brosnahan assumes the role of Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult steps into the part of Lex Luthor. Additionally, Edi Gathegi will play Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan takes on Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion is cast as Guy Gardner, a variation of Green Lantern.
Previously, Gunn chose several actors for his project, but he postponed making formal agreements until after Superman and Lois had been cast. In order to secure everything before the SAG-AFTRA strike began in July 2023, he hastily finalized all deals.
Fans had worries that all these additional superheroes might overshadow Superman and Lois, but Gunn clarified they remain the core focus of the story. In fact, he emphasized, “The other characters have their roles for a reason.” Explaining this further, Gunn stated that Superman’s interactions with both heroes and humans are crucial to understanding who he is as a character.
The film draws inspiration from the “All-Star Superman” comic books authored by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quitely. This storyline primarily explores the personal aspects of Superman, rather than merely focusing on action sequences, which aligns with Gunn’s apparent direction for this project.
On July 11, 2023, it was officially announced that Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi were joining the cast of an upcoming movie. Interestingly enough, this announcement was made two years prior to the movie’s release date. It’s worth noting that Fillion has collaborated with director James Gunn in “The Suicide Squad,” and has also lent his voice to Green Lantern in various animated productions. As for Merced, she had previously tried out for Batgirl in the abandoned DCEU film project.
