Good news for Nintendo fans! There’s a strong possibility that a Donkey Kong movie is in the works. According to industry source MyTimeToShineHello, Universal is potentially developing an animated film based on the popular character, with a possible release in 2028. Currently, no information about the plot or who will be involved has been announced.

During Nintendo’s yearly shareholder meeting, president Shuntaro Furukawa discussed the company’s plans for making movies.
Instead of just letting other companies use our characters and stories for movies, Nintendo is now taking a more hands-on role, actively participating in production and investing in projects when necessary. According to Nintendo’s president, this will help ensure the movies are high quality. He also hinted that several new movie projects, beyond what’s already been announced, are currently being developed, though he didn’t mention Donkey Kong specifically.
A Donkey Kong movie would align with Nintendo’s existing plans for animated films. With the Super Mario Galaxy Movie set to release on April 3, 2026, and a live-action Legend of Zelda film planned for May 2027, a Donkey Kong film could arrive around a year after Zelda, giving fans a steady stream of Nintendo adaptations.
Nintendo appears to be taking a hands-on approach to its movie adaptations, carefully overseeing production. This has fans hopeful that the films will be well-made.
