Netflix is transitioning the popular animated series “KPop Demon Hunters” from online streaming to a big-screen event. Starting on August 23rd and continuing through the 24th, the show will have a special two-day theater run in North America, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Even sing-along screenings are already running out of tickets.
Tickets are available through Fandango and movie theater retail sites.
A Big Box Office Test for Netflix
Approximately 1,700 movie theaters across the U.S. and Canada have scheduled the event so far, and there are even more theaters joining in. Additionally, over 1,000 screenings have already been fully booked before they even took place.
The movie theaters Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, and Alamo Drafthouse have agreed to participate. AMC Theatres has not yet signed up, but they might if demand continues to grow. Predictions indicate that these sing-along screenings could generate between $5 million and $10 million in North America.
What KPop Demon Hunters Is About
I’m all about the group HUNTR/X, a K-pop sensation comprising Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo). When we’re not dominating the global stage as iconic performers, we’re engaged in a clandestine war against supernatural forces. The biggest challenge we face comes in the shape of a deceptive boy band who, unbeknownst to us, are demons in disguise.
This animated movie from Sony Pictures Animation is helmed by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, featuring an ensemble voice cast that includes Ahn Hyo-seop, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Byung Hun Lee. The film blends the excitement of pop culture with elements of supernatural action.
From Streaming Success to Box Office Experiment
The animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” made its debut on Netflix in June and swiftly climbed to be their most-viewed original animated production. Currently, it ranks as the second most watched English-language movie on Netflix, amassing over 180 million views.
The music played a significant role in its achievement, with hit singles such as “Golden” reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and the album climbing to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Artists like EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, and even members from TWICE – Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung – contributed to this success.
Competition at the Box Office
The unique community gathering aimed at singing together is anticipated to liven up a typically sluggish late-August period. Among fresh offerings, Ethan Coen’s film “Honey Don’t!” is projected to bring in $3-4 million, and films like “Weapons” and “Freakier Friday“, which are entering their third weekends, will also be screening. Additionally, Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” and James Gunn’s “Superman” can still be found in theaters as well.
Should the movie “KPop Demon Hunters” gain significant success at the box office, this might signal a change in Netflix’s approach towards their top-performing titles, possibly leading to an increase in collaborative releases like this one in the future.
