Currently, the character of Doctor Who finds itself in an unusual position. The conclusion of season two took viewers by surprise with Ncuti Gatwa‘s unexpected regeneration into Billie Piper, leaving fans puzzled about whether she is the Sixteenth Doctor or merely a Rose Tyler-like glitch. At this point, it remains unknown if she will assume the role of the Doctor permanently. However, we do know that Ncuti Gatwa has concluded his tenure as the Fifteenth Doctor. Over time, he has bid emotional goodbyes, commended his co-stars, and shared fond memories of being on Doctor Who. Recently, Gatwa disclosed the reason behind his departure from Doctor Who, which turns out to be quite logical.
In an earlier interview with The Guardian, Gatwa – who’s currently immersed in theater work – referred to playing The Doctor as an extraordinary opportunity. He acknowledged that there were instances of harsh criticism, but the affection from Doctor Who fans made it all rewarding. However, during an appearance on BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, Gatwa confessed his decision to depart from Doctor Who was due to the demanding nature of being a Time Lord. “As I grow older and my body becomes weary,” Gatwa explained straightforwardly, “the show demands a lot – physically, emotionally, mentally. So it was time.
It’s quite logical. Being the Doctor requires both physical exertion and long hours due to demanding filming schedules and press engagements. The role of Doctor Who is indeed significant, and while we may not see Ncuti as an older man at 32, we absolutely understand and appreciate his decision to leave when it felt appropriate for him.
Ncuti Gatwa has expressed an interest in rejoining the show at some point, yet there’s no definite word about a third season. The future of this cherished sci-fi show remains uncertain, and for now, it seems to be on pause. Fingers crossed that it won’t fade away 20 years after its successful comeback. We truly hope that Ncuti Gatwa gets a well-deserved break following his exhausting stint on Doctor Who.
