Movies frequently take us to exciting locations, filled with romance and adventure. It’s especially wonderful to see Black actors and actresses taking the lead in these travel and love stories, offering a fresh perspective. These films show characters venturing out of their everyday lives – whether it’s a journey of self-discovery in a tropical paradise or a fast-paced romance in Europe – to explore the world and find love in surprising ways. The films below highlight these kinds of stories.

‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ (1998)

Stella Payne is a high-powered stockbroker in California who’s burned out and in need of a vacation. She and her best friend impulsively head to Jamaica to relax, but things get interesting when Stella meets Winston Shakespeare, a charming local man much younger than herself. The movie is a beloved example of how a vacation romance can lead to big changes in a person’s life.

‘Last Holiday’ (2006)

She uses her savings to travel to a beautiful hotel in the Czech Republic, determined to embrace life and take chances. ‘Coming to America’ (1988)

Prince Akeem, a wealthy prince from the fictional African country of Zamunda, decides he wants to find a wife he can connect with on a personal level, not just because of his royal status. He and his best friend Semmi travel to Queens, New York, and pretend to be regular guys to experience a different way of life. While adjusting to American culture, Akeem pursues Lisa McDowell, whose father owns a fast-food business. The movie playfully contrasts Akeem’s privileged background with the challenges of everyday life in the city, all while telling a sweet and funny love story.

Julie Hutton always dreamed of visiting Verona, Italy, but her trip gets off to a rocky start when she discovers her rental villa is already occupied. ‘Vacation Friends’ (2021)

Marcus and Emily planned a relaxing trip to Mexico, but they unexpectedly met a free-spirited couple, Ron and Kyla. What started as a calm vacation quickly turned into a week of wild fun, which they hoped would stay in Mexico. However, things get complicated when Ron and Kyla show up at Marcus and Emily’s formal wedding back home. The movie playfully examines the clash between the carefree versions of ourselves we present on vacation and the realities of everyday life, and how quickly travel friendships can lead to surprising connections.

‘Focus’ (2015)

Nicky Spurgeon is a professional scam artist who mentors a newcomer named Jess. They begin a romantic relationship, but Nicky ends it suddenly, wanting to avoid getting too emotionally involved. Three years later, they unexpectedly meet again in Buenos Aires, where they’re both involved in risky scams. The beautiful and dangerous city adds excitement to their renewed connection. Will Smith and Margot Robbie star in this story of lies and manipulation, where knowing who to trust is everything.

‘A United Kingdom’ (2016)

I was completely captivated by the story of Seretse Khama, the future king of Botswana, and his incredible love for Ruth Williams, a British woman he met in London. Their relationship wasn’t easy, though. It actually sparked a huge international issue between Britain and South Africa! The film follows their journey as they moved between the UK and Botswana, determined to be together despite the obstacles. What really struck me was how beautifully it showcased the landscapes of southern Africa, all while telling this powerful, true story of love overcoming prejudice and national boundaries. It’s a truly moving biographical drama.

‘Love & Basketball’ (2000)

Monica and Quincy have always loved basketball, and their lives – and romance – have been closely connected. Their basketball careers take them to different countries, with Monica eventually playing professionally in Spain. Quincy realizes he misses her deeply and travels to Barcelona to try and win her back. This time spent in Europe marks a turning point for both of them, as they grow and rediscover their connection. The story follows them over many years and across continents, demonstrating that finding lasting love often depends on being ready at the right moment.

‘Uncorked’ (2020)

Elijah wants to become a wine expert, but his father expects him to run the family barbecue restaurant. He goes to Paris to study at a prestigious wine school and experience French culture. This journey pushes him both in his studies and in his personal life as he adjusts to a new country. While he’s focused on his career and family, he’s truly passionate about wine, and Paris helps him grow and broaden his perspective.

‘Beyond the Lights’ (2014)

Noni, a famous singer, feels overwhelmed by the demands of her career and a difficult relationship with her mother. She finds comfort in a connection with Kaz, a police officer who looks beyond her celebrity persona. They escape to a secluded villa in Mexico hoping to find peace and be themselves, away from the constant attention of the media and the entertainment industry. The movie shows how stepping away from the public eye can help them heal and build a real connection.

‘Boxing Day’ (2021)

Melvin, a British author now living in the US, goes home to London for Christmas with his American fiancée, hoping to introduce her to his lively and unique British-Caribbean family. Things get tricky when he runs into someone from his past and old feelings resurface, potentially jeopardizing his engagement. The movie is a festive romantic comedy that showcases the energy of London at Christmas, explores what it means to be part of a diaspora, and celebrates Black British culture as it brings two different worlds together.

‘Everything, Everything’ (2017)

Maddy, a teenager with a weakened immune system, has lived her whole life inside. When she develops feelings for her neighbor, Olly, she decides to take a big risk and experience the world outside. Together, they travel to Hawaii, hoping to see the ocean and live life to the fullest. The bright, natural beauty of Hawaii is a stark contrast to the clinical environment Maddy has always known. This trip is a powerful step for Maddy, allowing her to take control of her life and pursue happiness.

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ (2019)

Okay, so picture this: Peter Parker, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, finally gets a break and goes on a class trip to Europe. He’s secretly hoping this will be the perfect time to tell MJ how he feels, but of course, it’s never that simple. They hit the usual tourist spots – Venice, Prague, London – all while dodging some seriously spooky supernatural baddies. What I really loved was how the film used these beautiful locations as a backdrop for Peter and MJ’s developing relationship. It’s a classic awkward teen romance, but with, you know, supervillains thrown in. And MJ isn’t just the girl he’s crushing on; she’s actually a really important anchor for Peter, helping him stay connected to a normal life when everything around him is anything but. The European setting wasn’t just window dressing; it genuinely fueled their connection and the story’s emotional core.

‘Couples Retreat’ (2009)

Shane and his wife travel to a beautiful resort in Bora Bora with three other couples, hoping for a relaxing week of sun and water sports. However, they’re surprised to learn that couples therapy is a required part of the vacation. Surrounded by stunning scenery, the couples experience both funny and awkward moments as they work through their relationship problems. They must address their issues during the trip, or risk damaging their marriages. The story shows how getting away from everyday life can force couples to confront what’s really going on in their relationships.

‘Coming 2 America’ (2021)

I was so excited to see King Akeem back in America! This time, though, he wasn’t looking for a bride – he was on a mission to find his long-lost son. It was amazing watching him bring his son back to Zamunda and start preparing him to be the next king. What I really loved was that this movie flipped the script from the first one; instead of us seeing the royals in America, we got to see the American characters trying to adjust to life in the incredible kingdom of Zamunda. There’s also a sweet love story that develops between the son and someone working in the palace, adding to all the excitement. The movie really builds on everything we loved about the original, expanding the world of Zamunda while keeping that hilarious cross-cultural humor we all enjoyed.

‘Girls Trip’ (2017)

Four close friends head to New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival, hoping to strengthen their bond. Their trip quickly becomes an unforgettable experience packed with dancing, unexpected adventures, and honest conversations. While the heart of the story is their friendship, one friend, Ryan, also finds a potential romance. The lively atmosphere of New Orleans helps each woman face her own challenges and discover what truly matters, celebrating the freedom and fun of traveling with those you love.
