Enthusiasts eager for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie featuring Karl Urban, directed by Simon McQuoid, will have to wait a bit more since New Line Cinema announced that the release of Mortal Kombat II has been postponed, as indicated by an official poster.
The follow-up was initially scheduled for a theater release on October 24, but has been moved to May 15, 2026 instead. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema think the film might do better in the summer season at the box office, considering the positive response to its trailer.
In simpler terms, “Mortal Kombat II” carries forward the narrative from the 2021 “Mortal Kombat” film. This movie was helmed by director Simon McQuoid, with a screenplay penned by Jeremy Slater. It is inspired by the legendary video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.
In this follow-up movie, it represents the fourth chapter in the Mortal Kombat film saga. Actors returning for another round include Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman (playing a fresh character), Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. For the first time in this series, we’ll see Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle on screen as well.
Following the debut of “Mortal Kombat” in April 2021, producer Todd Garner, scriptwriter Greg Russo, and director Simon McQuoid started mapping out the series’ upcoming direction.
They talked about creating individual films for characters such as Johnny Cage and Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, along with a follow-up movie. By 2022, Warner Bros. gave the go-ahead for this project, with Jeremy Slater handling the script and McQuoid back to direct it.
Production for the film kicked off in Australia in June 2023, took a break in mid-July due to a SAG-AFTRA strike, resumed again around November 15th, and wrapped up by the end of January 2024.
It’s called Mortal Kombat (II).
