Unfortunately, fans eagerly anticipating a showdown between Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and others in Mortal Kombat II will have to wait longer. Originally slated for October 24 of this year, the release has been pushed back almost seven months to May 15, 2026, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Given that we’ve only just had the first trailer a little over a month ago, it appears the sequel to the 2021 reboot was coming quite quickly. However, New Line is banking on the same level of success with a mid-May release as they achieved with this year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines.
The new “Mortal Kombat” movie premiered during the peak of a mixed release strategy amidst the pandemic, being simultaneously released in theaters and on HBO Max. This film, based on the notoriously violent fighting game, stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, a fighter who becomes part of a supernatural tournament. Alongside him are several characters from the game, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Josh Lawson as Kano, and others. The movie also features action veterans Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, and Tadanobu Asano portraying Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden respectively.
In the sequel, the main new cast member is Karl Urban, portraying action star-turned-fighter Johnny Cage. Also joining the lineup are Adeline Rudolph (as Kitana), Tati Gabrielle (as Jade), Martyn Ford (as Shao Khan), and CJ Bloomfield (as Baraka).
Mortal Kombat II will get ready to fight for box office glory May 15, 2026.
