‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Release Date Moved Up, But Don’t Get Your Hopes Up Too Much

A new Mortal Kombat movie is in the works, continuing the story that began with the 2021 film. It promises more martial arts action and fantasy elements.

Simon McQuoid directed the film, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. The movie features returning cast members like Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman (playing a different character this time), Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Joining them are new actors Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle.

I was so excited when the first Mortal Kombat film came out in April 2021, and it wasn’t long before the people behind it – Todd Garner, Greg Russo, and McQuoid – started thinking about what came next. They discussed making individual movies focused on characters like Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero, and even a follow-up to the 2021 film. Thankfully, by 2022, Warner Bros. gave the sequel the green light! McQuoid was back to direct, and Slater was brought in to write the script – it was fantastic news for fans like me!

Filming started in Australia in June 2023, but had to temporarily stop in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Shooting resumed in November and finished in late January 2024.

It’s called Mortal Kombat (II).
Mortal Kombat II – only in theatres and October 24.

The film centers on Earthrealm’s heroes, including Johnny Cage, who must fight both each other and the villain Shao Kahn to prevent him from conquering their world.

Warner Bros. has announced the movie will now hit theaters nationwide on May 8, 2026. This is a change from earlier plans, as the release date was previously set for October 24th of this year and then May 15th, 2026, indicating the film’s release has been adjusted multiple times.

A third Mortal Kombat movie is already being planned, meaning the series will likely continue with more films after the next one comes out.
