More Charlton Comics Heroes May Be Coming to the DCU

Peacemaker, the star of his own HBO Max series, surprisingly didn’t begin as a DC Comics character. He first appeared in 1966 with Charlton Comics, alongside heroes like the original Blue Beetle and Captain Atom. DC Comics acquired these Charlton characters in 1984 and integrated them into the DC Universe following the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event. Recently, a fan asked James Gunn on Threads if other Charlton heroes might join his new DC Universe, and Gunn hinted that it’s a possibility, saying, “You might be in luck.”

With a few episodes left, will *Peacemaker* bring more heroes from the old Charlton Comics universe into the new DC Universe? The show has already introduced Judomaster, who originated in those comics, and the recent *Blue Beetle* movie subtly hinted at the Ted Kord version of the character. Other key Charlton heroes still waiting in the wings include The Question, Captain Atom, and Nightshade. The Question is a well-known hero with a history of starring in his own comics, while Captain Atom is one of DC’s most powerful characters – on par with Superman. If these heroes appear soon, whether on *Peacemaker* or in other projects, it would be significant for the DCU.

The characters who became known as the Watchmen originally started as heroes from the Charlton comic line. Alan Moore’s groundbreaking Watchmen story was built on these characters – The Comedian was based on Peacemaker, Dr. Manhattan on Captain Atom, Nite Owl on Blue Beetle, and so on. However, DC Comics thought the Charlton heroes were too important to use in just a single story, so Moore created similar, but slightly different, characters instead. Years later, writer Grant Morrison brought a version of the original Charlton heroes back to life in the Multiversity series, mirroring the style of Watchmen. This created a fascinating circular connection. Now, with the current storylines, it’s possible these are the heroes from the alternate Earth visited by Chris Smith, and we might discover the answer soon.
