Modest Mouse celebrates 20 years of ‘Good News’ with anniversary tour

The 20th anniversary of “Good News for People Who Love Bad News” is not just a celebration of an album, but a tribute to the band’s resilience and enduring spirit.

Modest Mouse is preparing to embark on a U.S. tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their album titled “Good News for People Who Love Bad News“. This was their fourth studio album, and it played a crucial part in boosting the band’s popularity. The success can be attributed to popular tracks like “Float On,” “Ocean Breathes Softly,” and “The World at Large.” Released in 2004, “Good News for People Who Love Bad News” stands as a pivotal milestone in their career. It reached platinum status and even garnered Grammy nominations, including one for “Float On”, which was quite impressive given the band’s reputation as a potential “one-hit wonder”.

Back in the start of this year, the group marked the album’s significant achievement by putting out an extended version. This re-release features eight remixes from well-known artists like Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT, who gave a fresh take on “The View”, and Jacknife Lee, who offered a remix for “Bury Me With It”. Other notable additions include Dan the Automator’s remix for “Float On” and Justin Raisen’s reinterpretation for “The Good Times Are Killing Me”. These remixes infuse new vitality into the timeless tracks, incorporating contemporary interpretations whilst maintaining the original’s unique indie rock allure.

To celebrate the reissue, Modest Mouse has officially unveiled an anniversary tour. The band plans to perform more than 20 concerts throughout the U.S., kicking off on October 28 at The Republik in Honolulu, Hawaii, and then moving on to Seattle’s Paramount Theater on October 30. The tour continues into November with three consecutive nights at Portland’s Rev Hall on November 1, 2, and 3, before heading to Oakland, Los Angeles, and various other significant cities such as San Diego, Denver, and Chicago. The tour wraps up with three shows at Brooklyn Steel in New York from November 21 to 23.

Isaac Brock, the lead singer, spoke enthusiastically about the upcoming tour in earlier interviews this year, highlighting the emotional importance of performing “Good News for People Who Love Bad News” with most of the original musicians who had worked on the album. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he pointed out that it was the only record where he could tour alongside all the surviving band members. Unfortunately, the tour does not include Jeremiah Green, the late drummer, who temporarily left the group during the album’s recording but later returned. Heartbreakingly, Green passed away on December 31, 2022, at the age of 45, after a brief fight against cancer. His absence will certainly be keenly felt as he was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound throughout their career.

Brock suggested new music, revealing to Consequence that the band has finished an album’s worth of fresh tracks, which might be released as soon as next spring. If true, this would mark their first complete album release since the 2021 album “The Golden Casket.
