Disney’s new live-action version of Moana will once again transport audiences to the beautiful island of Motunui. While a new cast will bring the story to life, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is returning as the charismatic demigod Maui. The latest trailer gives fans a first look at his updated appearance, complete with long, flowing hair.
….It’s weird.
Disney’s live-action Moana introduces Catherine Lagaʻaia as the new Moana, and she’ll be joined by familiar faces! Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is returning as Maui, and fans will also see the same lovable (and slightly clueless) Heihei and the glamorous, treasure-hoarding Tamatoa.
Honestly, the trailer is a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the shots are amazing – especially the ones that look like they were filmed on location. That’s what I was hoping for with a live-action Moana – showcasing those beautiful islands! But way too many scenes look like they were quickly shot in front of a green screen, and it really shows. They feel unfinished, like someone threw them together right before releasing the trailer. It’s definitely not the impression they want to give!
A new sneak peek from Disney highlights the promising aspects of the movie and suggests the finished film will be a significant improvement over the initial trailer, which some found disappointing. It offers a hopeful look at what’s to come, exceeding the expectations set by the trailer.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the movie features John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as her mother, Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. It will be released in theaters on July 10th this summer.
This gives everyone time to adjust to seeing Dwayne Johnson with a lot more hair – as much as anyone could, really.
