The Fantastic Four franchise has a long history of failed attempts and disappointing movies – enough material for a fascinating documentary. However, the 2015 Fantastic Four film, directed by Josh Trank (known for Chronicle), is often considered the worst. It was a major flop and stalled the series for years. The production was plagued with problems, and the actors generally avoid discussing it. Recently, Miles Teller, who played Reed Richards in that film, told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM (as reported by Variety) who he believes was primarily responsible. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s a shame the movie didn’t do well, especially considering how much effort everyone put into it. It seems like one key person may have made a critical mistake that negatively impacted the final result. I recall watching it and immediately telling a studio executive that I feared it wouldn’t be successful.

Miles Teller doesn’t mention anyone specifically, but it seems clear he’s talking about director Josh Trank. They reportedly had a very difficult working relationship during filming. Even before the 2015 movie Fantastic Four was released, Trank publicly criticized it, saying it wasn’t the film he’d intended to create. After that, he didn’t direct another movie until 2020’s Capone, which starred Tom Hardy.
For ten years, Fox didn’t make any Fantastic Four movies, until the recent reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which most people liked. It makes you wonder if the 2015 Fantastic Four movie could have been better if the production hadn’t been so troubled. Fox wanted a darker, more realistic version, but that didn’t really fit with what fans love about the Fantastic Four, so it might have been destined to fail anyway. If you’re curious, you can watch the 2015 Fantastic Four on Disney+.
