Mike Francesa Slams James Gunn’s Superman: ‘Unmitigated Garbage,’ ‘Torture,’ and ‘An Insult’

In his most recent podcast, renowned New York sports radio host Mike Francesa fiercely criticized the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn, labeling it as “unadulterated rubbish,” “excruciatingly painful,” and “the absolute worst thing I’ve ever witnessed.

Renowned for his extensive career spanning over several decades on WFAN and “Mike and the Mad Dog”, Francesa typically focuses on baseball and football. However, when discussing films, he is not shy about expressing his opinions.

And he did not hold back here.

“This Was Awful. This Was Torture.”

Francesa began his discourse about Superman by stating that he isn’t typically part of the main fanbase, but having grown up with George Reeves portraying Superman, he’s always admired the character.

But James Gunn’s version?

It would be wise to make a more polished presentation, as the material from last night was quite disturbing. It wasn’t just bad; it was truly dreadful.

And that was just the beginning.

“Superman Got Beat Up for Two Hours”

Francesa couldn’t believe how weak the Man of Steel looked throughout the movie:

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that I recently watched this fresh take on Superman, and while it’s not Christopher Reeve, he was alright in his own way. The film clocked in at two hours, and boy, did they pack a punch – literally! It seemed like our beloved Man of Steel was constantly taking hits. Frankly, I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to see Superman endure such relentless beatings for an entire movie.

In the film, everyone seems to be mercilessly attacking him. At one point, it appeared as though Jimmy Olsen might have intervened. And there was also a moment when it seemed like Lois Lane could have thrown him out of a window.

“Who Came Up With a Dog With a Cape?”

Francesa was completely baffled by the addition of Krypto the Superdog, among other elements:

Initially, there are robots introduced. However, I’m not in favor of these machines. And certainly, I don’t want robots looking after Superman. No way! Then, there’s this idea of a superhero dog. Now, where did that come from? We all love dogs, right? But who conceived a canine with a cape?

He added:

The dog was more heroic than Superman. Lois Lane stood out as even more heroic. And Jimmy Olsen, who used to be a young reporter with a basic brownie camera, is now putting down supermodels on weekends.

“Lois Lane Driving a Spaceship? What Am I Watching?”

He lit into the film’s wild sci-fi plot twists:

This scenario doesn’t seem designed for Lois Lane operating a spaceship to rescue Superman. In fact, it feels quite unusual and leaves me puzzled as to what I’m witnessing.

If you suggest watching this movie again, I’d need a substantial amount of money, not just a little, to agree.

“This Was an Affront to My Senses”

Once more, Francesca – who spent her childhood years engrossed in Superman television shows – believed that the film failed to honor the character’s storied past.

This science fiction film was disappointing and disrespectful to the Superman legacy; as a former viewer on Channel 11 Saturdays, it felt like an assault on my sensibilities.

“This was a disaster before you get into all the Middle East innuendos.”

“If My Name Was on the Credits, I’d Hide It”

He strongly criticized the filmmakers (specifically James Gunn) and expressed disbelief about their decision-making process, going as far as to speculate that they might have been under the influence of some substance.

This is really disappointing… I suspect the authors might have been under the influence of something unusual when they made their final decision about this work.

This project appears to be the result of the creators and authors being severely disappointed or shocked, given its poor quality.

Francesa’s Final Word on Superman

Francesa didn’t bother naming David Corenswet or James Gunn, but his message was loud and clear:

As a passionate film enthusiast, this movie left me utterly disappointed. It was hands-down the most abysmal cinematic experience I’ve had thus far. At times, I found myself contemplating self-inflicted discomfort just to stay alert and endure it.

“I’m not even going to debate with someone who liked this.”

Bottom Line

Mike Francesa didn’t merely criticize James Gunn’s Superman, he utterly tore it apart. His scathing critique stands out as one of the most ferocious reviews the film has faced thus far, and it’s rapidly gaining traction on social media platforms, stirring conversations among moviegoers and fans alike.

If you’re going to the theater expecting classic Superman? Francesa’s advice is clear:

“Give me a break. That’s not Superman. That’s garbage.”
