2099, a new limited series continuation of Blade Runner, which was previously Blade Runner 2049, is scheduled for release in the year 2026 on Prime Video.
The news originated from Laura Lancaster, who holds the position of Head of U.S. Streaming Television Development and Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, in an internal communication that also announced executive advancements. This information was later verified by Deadline.
Michelle Yeoh Leads the Cast
In the upcoming movie titled “Blade Runner 2099,” Michelle Yeoh is set to appear, though details about her character remain secretive. It’s anticipated that she might take on a role similar to Harrison Ford’s Deckard in the original “Blade Runner” (1982) and Ryan Gosling’s K in “Blade Runner 2049,” as a Blade Runner. Alternatively, there’s speculation that Yeoh could play a replicant who becomes an investigator, offering a fresh take on the franchise’s narrative focus.
The story unfolds in the year 2099, fifty years after the events depicted in the 2017 film. Like its predecessors, this series delves into the complex boundary between humans and artificial beings. Yeoh’s character embarks on an investigation that uncovers some disquieting realities regarding these entities.
The cast also includes Hunter Schafer, Tom Burke, Lewis Gribben, Wil Coban, and Hugo Hamlet.
Franchise Background
In continuation of the storyline initiated by Ridley Scott’s 1982 movie, originally based on Philip K. Dick’s 1968 book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, Denis Villeneuve took over as director for the subsequent installment titled “Blade Runner 2049”. The film featured Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in lead roles.
The franchise is known for blending elements of sci-fi detective stories, deep explorations of identity themes, and striking future-set aesthetics. The upcoming Amazon Prime Video show aims to continue this legacy in a modern context.
Production and Creative Team
At present, the show is being filmed, with Silka Luisa taking on the role of the show’s lead writer or creator (similar to a showrunner). Notably, Ridley Scott is involved in the production as an executive producer.
More recently, Yeoh was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Following the cancellation of “The Brothers Sun” on Netflix, she now joins the cast of “Blade Runner 2099”. Additionally, she continues her involvement in the “Star Trek” universe, having starred in both “Section 31” and previously in “Star Trek: Discovery”. Moreover, she is set to appear in James Cameron’s upcoming “Avatar” sequels as Dr. Karina Mogue.
Release Window
Although an exact release date hasn’t been shared yet, it’s confirmed that Blade Runner 2099 will make its debut exclusively on Prime Video in the year 2026.
