At first, Kimmel didn’t know who was inside the mascot costume. Damon used a silly, cartoon-like voice while talking to the host, playfully teasing him and even asking the audience if Kimmel appeared “dumb.”
The suspense grew and grew until Kimmel dramatically pulled off the mascot head, exposing Damon to the thrilled crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House.
The actor continued to entertain. He playfully chatted with Kimmel about his outfit, suggesting it was more than just a costume and jokingly alluding to something special.
Damon then spoke directly to Kimmel, saying, “I know we haven’t always seen eye-to-eye, but I wanted to be here tonight to celebrate your final show.” Kimmel playfully pointed out that he actually had one more episode to go, which led to a funny exchange about a joke “cancellation” of the show by the president.
The lively and unpredictable energy kept going when Damon addressed Kimmel’s mother, who was sitting in the audience. “What’s up, Joan? What’s up? Hey, girl!” he called out, and even quickly took her hand as he walked off stage.
This playful trick is the newest event in a funny back-and-forth that started in 2005. It began when Kimmel finished a show with the well-known line, “Apologies to Matt Damon, but we ran out of time,” even though Damon was never actually planned to be on the program.
Throughout the years, the two have embraced the humorous situation, frequently including other famous people such as Ben Affleck, Sarah Silverman, and Tom Brady in the fun.
