In an unexpected twist, stumbling upon $20 million hidden within the dilapidated walls of a home might seem like a dream come true for law enforcement officers whose main focus is tracking down illicit funds. However, in the gripping debut of The Rip, this sensational find proves to be far from advantageous. Here’s the movie’s official synopsis from Netflix:
“In the small coastal town of Barren Island, off-duty detective Tom Harding investigates a series of disturbing events that seem to be connected to an eerie underwater riptide known as ‘The Rip.’ As he delves deeper into the mystery, he uncovers dark secrets about the town and its residents. Faced with terrifying encounters and personal losses, Tom must race against time to expose the truth before he becomes the next victim.
Upon finding large amounts of cash hidden in an abandoned hideout, the camaraderie within a police squad from Miami starts to unravel. As more people find out about the substantial haul, doubts start to surface – doubts about their colleagues and who they can truly depend on.
Joe Carnahan, director of “The Rip” (previously seen in “The A-Team” and “The Grey”), recently shared with Netflix’s Tudum that the movie is a continuation of the cop film genre, tracing its roots to films like “Serpico,” “Prince of the City,” and Michael Mann’s “Heat.” The cast includes Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and Sasha Calle.
Could we find ourselves questioning who the sympathetic figures are? Might it be possible that none of these individuals will leave us unscathed? At least one character is likely to bring about a profound sense of sorrow. According to Carnahan, “If the audience connects emotionally with the characters, you’ve succeeded, because eventually, someone is going to break your heart, and it’s just a matter of who.
It’s possible that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck might betray one another in some capacity. Alternatively, either one of them could deceive the other. Regardless, the events that may lead to heartbreak are scheduled for January 16, 2026 on Netflix.
