The movie Marty Supreme has been a huge hit with audiences. The exciting ping-pong drama has been praised, especially for Timothée Chalamet’s compelling performance as Marty Mauser, which recently earned him a Golden Globe award. Surprisingly, the original idea for the film was even more unusual: director Josh Safdie initially planned for the movie to end with Kevin O’Leary’s character revealing himself as a vampire and biting Chalamet! It was a truly unexpected concept.

Okay, so you’re probably thinking this sounds completely insane, and honestly, A24 initially thought so too when the Safdie brothers first suggested it. But it’s true! The director actually talked about it on a recent A24 podcast with Sean Baker, the guy who did Anora. Apparently, the original idea for the ending was WILD. It would have jumped ahead to the 1980s, showing an older Marty taking his granddaughter to a show. Then, totally out of nowhere, O’Leary’s character would appear and… bite Marty in the neck! Turns out, he’s a vampire. Seriously! It’s a pretty big shift from what we actually got, huh?
So, I was talking to Baker about this crazy scene they shot. Apparently, the camera was right on the actor’s eyes, and they’d actually built a prosthetic for this kid, Timmy. Then, out of nowhere, this character, Mr. Wonderful, just comes up and bites his neck – and that was the very last shot of the whole film! It was a really intense way to end things, to say the least.
That ending would have been a pretty unexpected twist, but considering the director’s use of other details from that era, it wouldn’t have been completely out of place. Unfortunately, we’ll probably never find out if that’s what he had in mind.

Although the ending Safdie brothers originally envisioned for Marty Supreme didn’t make it into the final film, it’s funny to picture Mr. Wonderful with a fantastic set of teeth. It’s a fun thought! We didn’t get vampires, but the movie that did make it to the screen is still really great. You can still see Marty Supreme in cinemas now.
