Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Chuck Norris joined the US Air Force in 1958 and served until 1962. It was during his time in the military that he earned the nickname ‘Chuck’ and began training in martial arts. After leaving the Air Force with an honorable discharge, he opened his own martial arts studio.
Chuck Norris has had a long and varied career, starting with classic films like The Way of the Dragon (1972) with Bruce Lee, and continuing through An Eye for an Eye (1981) and Code of Silence (1985). He became a household name for younger generations through the TV series Walker, Texas Ranger, which aired from 1993 to 2001. While he largely stopped acting in the 2010s, Norris gained a new level of fame as an internet sensation, fueled by humorous claims about his unbeatable fighting skills. A lifelong martial artist, he also founded two systems of the discipline: American Tang Soo Do and the Chuck Norris System.
Chuck Norris is well-known for his conservative beliefs, which frequently appeared in the news. He publicly supported right-wing politicians, advocated for gun rights, and often criticized prominent Democrats. This made him a controversial figure, though many people weren’t surprised by his positions.
He is survived by his five children and a host of grandkids.
