As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to hear Mark Ruffalo say he’s definitely up for a solo Hulk movie! It’s been tricky for years though, because the rights to the character are complicated – Universal Pictures has a big piece of the pie, which has always made it difficult to get a standalone Hulk film off the ground.
The actor discussed the challenges of making a solo Hulk movie in an interview with GQ.
Universal Still Holds the Rights
Mark Ruffalo expressed his desire for a standalone Hulk movie. He explained that the rights to the Hulk actually belong to Universal, not Marvel, which complicates making it happen.
As a big Marvel fan, I always understood why we didn’t get a direct sequel to the first Hulk movie from 2008. Apparently, it all came down to the rights! Marvel Studios didn’t own Hulk outright, so instead of trying for a Hulk 2, they cleverly found ways to include him in other films. Thor: Ragnarok was a perfect example – it basically adapted the awesome Planet Hulk comic storyline, but they called it a Thor movie to work around the rights Universal held. It was a smart move that let us still see the Hulk on the big screen!
Ruffalo on More Hulk Movies
Mark Ruffalo mentioned discussions are happening about a potential new Hulk movie, but he’s not sure if audiences are really interested in one.
He admitted they often discuss the possibility of another Hulk movie. With so many Hulk films already made, he questioned whether there’s still strong public interest, but he personally wants to make one and believes audiences would enjoy it if they could find the right approach.
Fans Say the MCU Has Already “Ruined” Hulk
Look, Mark Ruffalo seems game to play the Hulk again, which is great! But honestly, a lot of us fans aren’t so sure. We’re hesitant to see that particular take on the character continue, especially after how things have gone in the recent Marvel movies. We’re hoping for a different direction if he does come back.
After Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk’s change into “Smart Hulk” in Endgame was seen by many fans as a step down, turning the previously formidable character into a source of comedy. This trend continued in the Disney+ series She-Hulk, where the Hulk was essentially reduced to a caricature of his former self.
Mark Ruffalo’s strong political views have alienated some fans, who feel his activism influences how he portrays his character in Marvel movies.
What’s Next for the Hulk
There’s talk that Marvel might be changing Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk back to a more classic, powerful version in the next Spider-Man: Brand New Day film. This could be a way to adjust the character’s direction after previous appearances.
For years, fans have hoped for a movie pitting Hulk against Wolverine, potentially starring Hugh Jackman. If this rumor is true, it could allow Marvel to bring back the Hulk as the powerful, unpredictable character many fans remember.
