Mark Hamill has recently discussed what it would be like to revisit his role in Star Wars, and talked about the difficulties he faced while playing Luke Skywalker.
In an interview on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Mark Hamill drew a parallel between Luke Skywalker’s journey and the format of a James Bond film. He expressed contentment with his time playing the character and shared his enthusiasm for the direction of shows like *The Mandalorian* and *The Book of Boba Fett*.
I was asked to make short appearances while Luke Skywalker was incredibly popular. I explained to George Lucas that it was similar to the James Bond films – you see Bond as a child dreaming of being a spy, then training to become one, and finally earning his license to kill. After that, the films typically stop. Luke’s story had a clear beginning and end, but no extended adventures like those Bond films. That’s just how things unfolded. I had my run, and I’m happy for everyone involved and wish them continued success.
Mark Hamill has reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in several films since the original Star Wars trilogy. He appeared in *The Force Awakens*, took on a divisive portrayal in *The Last Jedi*, and later returned as a Force ghost in *The Rise of Skywalker*.
He recently appeared in the Disney+ shows *The Mandalorian* and *The Book of Boba Fett*. Thanks to digital technology that made him look younger, he was able to play Luke Skywalker again, in scenes set after the movie *Return of the Jedi*.
Hamill’s statements show he appreciates the new Star Wars films and understands his character’s story has reached a natural ending. He’s happy with how Luke Skywalker’s journey finished and is supportive of the current creative team’s work.
