Finnish design powerhouses, Artek and Marimekko, have come together to launch a unique line of furniture, showcasing the shared richness of their artistic legacy.
Design giants Artek and Marimekko teamed up to create a special collection of furniture that highlights their joint creative history.
At the upcoming 3daysofdesign event in Copenhagen, the collaboration between “Artek” and “Marimekko” will unveil a collection where classic Artek designs by Alvar Aalto are revitalized with vibrant Marimekko motifs.
Among the items in the set, you will find a Stool 60, Bench 153B, and Table 90D – all of which were crafted by Alvar Aalto during the years 1933 to 1945. Three distinct patterns from Marimekko’s “Architect” series, designed by Maija Isola, have been selected for this collection. These prints are now among the brand’s most recognized designs.
Instead of merely placing the patterns from “Lokki”, “Seireeni”, and “Kivet” onto the furniture, the artisans at Artek skillfully recreate these designs using the intricate method of marquetry.
As I gamefully apply intricate patterns on my veneer top surface using marquetry, the designs dance in a mesmerizing display, reacting vividly to even the slightest movement and light changes. This collection mirrors Artek and Marimekko’s unwavering dedication to crafting enduring designs, with the marquetry technique employed ensuring minimal waste in the wood production process.
The Artek and Marimekko collaboration marks a significant milestone as it celebrates both brands reaching their 90th year. This latest offering follows a special edition line inspired by the beloved Moomin characters, created by Finnish artist Tove Jansson in 1945. Additionally, a celebratory poster has been added to the collection, designed by contemporary Finnish artist Inka Bell.
Though the official release of these pieces is set for September this year, a sneak peek will be available at an exhibition, creatively curated by Linda Bergoth, during the 3daysofdesign event in Copenhagen. This exhibition will run from June 17 to 21.
