As a longtime fan of both Drake and The Weeknd, I’ve been following their careers closely over the years. It’s fascinating to witness the evolution of their relationship from camaraderie to apparent rivalry. From “Starboy” collaborating with Drake on “False Alarm” to the recent back-and-forth diss tracks, it’s clear that there’s a deep-seated beef between these two Canadian titans.

This year, several rappers have had conflicts with Drake, such as Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, and A$AP Rocky. However, it’s possible that some people may overlook the fact that The Weeknd is also involved in a feud with Drizzy, as he was criticized by him on the track “Push Ups.”

As a devoted fan, I responded to the “After Hours” artist’s initial jab by firing a couple of subtle digs his way, specifically referencing tracks on Future and Metro Boomin’s collaborative album, “We Still Don’t Trust You”. This move seemingly ignited more hostility from Drake, who subsequently took aim at me once more in his song, “Family Matters”.

Recently, there has been speculation on social media suggesting that The Weeknd and Drake have had a long-standing rivalry, with some citing a 2013 video release by Drake as evidence. Drake, a member of the OVO collective, included this video in his second round of a massive data dump containing 100 gigs of content.

In the video, we see a younger Drake walking into a backstage area, exchanging pleasantries with most people, yet neglecting to greet The Weeknd initially. However, towards the video’s end, just before they could shake hands, the recording abruptly stopped.

Many responded to the clip on X and said they could feel the tension coming through their screen.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the palpable tension between Drake and The Weeknd. It seems like we’ve been transported back to 2013! One commentator put it bluntly: “You can see Abel doesn’t feel the love for him [Drake],” while another added a chuckle, “Drake gave everyone in the room a nod but The Weeknd. That’s where the animosity stems from.”

It hasn’t been made clear by either Drake or The Weeknd the reason behind their feud. Some speculate it may have stemmed from Drake attempting to sign him to his OVO Sound label, but ultimately choosing not to. Then, when The Weeknd signed with Atlantic Records in 2012, some believed that Drake was taking a jab at him. Drake wrote on Twitter, “You won’t get away with just a thank you…you owe me a favor.”

After their friendly interaction following the 2012 tweet, it remains unclear whether The Weeknd and Drake’s rift began due to him not joining OVO (October’s Very Own). However, it’s indisputable that a significant issue exists between them.
