Lunar Training Habitat by SAGA Space Architects Blends Sci-Fi Futurism With Scandinavian Warmth

Danish design company SAGA, known for its expertise in space architecture, has collaborated with the European Space Agency (ESA) to create an astronaut habitat suitable for Artemis missions. In 2026, a simulation of the lunar surface will be unveiled at the LUNA facility located in Cologne, Germany, where aspiring astronauts will reside within SAGA’s FLEXHab during their training. The interior of this functional workspace is designed with a cozy ambiance, blending Scandinavian aesthetics and sci-fi futurism by incorporating earthy materials and modern technology.

The SAGA mission architecture prioritizes long-term missions for up to four crew members, with a focus on enhancing human comfort and wellness. By incorporating circadian lighting, tactile soft materials, and genuine natural elements, the space exudes a sense of warmth and coziness similar to Danish concept of hygge. Yet, maintaining a touch of futuristic elegance, features like the chrome-finished bathroom and streamlined sleep pods echo classic sci-fi aesthetics and Space Age design.

The galley provides a special relaxation zone for the crew, featuring a fully functional kitchen, a dining area, and windows shaped like lunar sceneries. The kitchen cupboards and Vegan Suede benches, made of Alcantara, have a deep blue hue that resembles Earth’s oceans and skies. To give the space a more natural feel, SAGA incorporates elements such as 3D-printed recycled wood, cork panels, and soundproof wall coverings. These elements bring a sense of familiarity to the otherwise spaceship-like interior design.
