Why the Trilogy Is Returning
As a film critic, I have to say Fathom Events is making a smart move bringing these films back to the big screen. According to Fathom CEO Ray Nutt, these aren’t just nostalgic re-releases; the sheer impact and groundbreaking techniques still hold up beautifully, and you can really see how much modern blockbuster filmmaking owes to Peter Jackson’s vision. We’re talking about a six-film saga that’s earned a staggering $6 billion globally and an incredible 17 Academy Awards – making it the most Oscar-winning series ever. It’s a cinematic achievement that deserves to be experienced in a theater, and frankly, it’s a testament to just how much these films continue to resonate with audiences.
The anniversary also sets the stage for Warner Bros.’ upcoming Middle-earth adventure, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which will be released on December 17, 2027.
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, praised The Lord of the Rings trilogy as a groundbreaking achievement in filmmaking. He noted its incredible visuals, captivating story, and powerful performances significantly elevated the standard for movies.
To mark the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, Fathom is teaming up with Warner Bros. to bring all of the films back to the big screen. Fans can experience Peter Jackson’s extended editions, and for the first time, see them in immersive 4DX.
