The cancellation of DC Comics’ *Red Hood* series, written by trans author Gretchen Felker-Martin, has sparked significant backlash, now including criticism from Lilly Wachowski, co-director of *The Matrix* films, who publicly condemned the publisher’s decision on social media.
Gretchen Felker-Martin’s Comments
DC Comics writer Felker-Martin, known for her work on the Red Hood series, caused significant controversy after publicly celebrating the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. She shared a post online saying, “Thoughts and prayers you Nazi b-tch… Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie.”
DC Comics cancelled the *Red Hood* series after only one issue. They informed stores that all pre-orders for upcoming issues would be reimbursed, and explained that content encouraging hostility or violence didn’t align with their company values.

Felker-Martin’s Reaction to Being Fired
In an interview with *The Comics Journal*, Felker-Martin acknowledged making the statements on impulse, but stated she didn’t regret them.
I was really shocked to hear her say she’s done with DC Comics completely. She made it super clear she won’t be working with them again, even if they asked her to. She explained it’s because she doesn’t want to support a company that seems okay with people like Charlie Kirk, and she doesn’t want to give them any respect.

Lilly Wachowski Weighs In
I was really upset to see the news about DC firing Felker-Martin, and Lilly Wachowski spoke out about it on Bluesky, which I totally appreciate. She didn’t hold back, calling out Charlie Kirk for who he is – a white nationalist and someone who clearly hates trans people. It’s good to see someone with her platform standing up for what’s right.
DC Comics is facing criticism for supporting someone with hateful views – specifically, a white nationalist and transphobe – and continuing their association with them, even after they were involved in the firing of Gretchen Felker-Martin. Many believe this action goes against the values that DC’s characters represent.

Fallout Continues
The dismissal of Felker-Martin follows a large wave of online criticism. Others in the gaming and entertainment industries, such as developers from Sony’s Sucker Punch and Blizzard, are also under fire for making insensitive comments about or celebrating the death of Kirk.
Stephen King, Dwayne Johnson’s daughter, and the video game company Bethesda are all receiving significant criticism right now.
