Last week, LEGO unveiled an official new collectible Death Star model from the Star Wars universe. This LEGO set is their largest ever, and at a $1,000 price point, it also happens to be their most expensive. However, this massive project didn’t quench LEGO’s thirst for iconic sci-fi franchises, so they’re planning on letting fans of other “Star” series enjoy the fun of building with plastic bricks as well. A brief teaser video from Star Trek has been released, hinting that official LEGO sets based on Gene Roddenberry’s franchise are coming soon.
The video initiates in a Transporter room while the iconic theme tune resonates. Subsequently, a miniature Captain Picard figure materializes, entering with a grand, Kirk-like display. It’s curious as to why Picard is featured instead of Kirk or Spock, or any other renowned Federation officer; could this be a sneak peek that the first STAR TREK LEGO set might focus on THE NEXT GENERATION? Given the Enterprise’s memorable and emotional resurgence in PICARD, it seems highly likely.
Until we’re told differently we’re going to assume “yes definitely.”
Regardless of which collection we receive initially, it’s evident that it will mark the start of many more to come. Longtime enthusiasts of both LEGO and Star Trek have eagerly anticipated this collaboration, as there are numerous characters, series, films, and memorable moments spanning decades and generations that are ripe for a LEGO rendition.
This new collaboration was made feasible last year following the expiration of the rights agreement for the sci-fi franchise with Bluebrixx. Fans of that series might find this development disheartening, but Star Trek enthusiasts can expect that LEGO’s collection will not fall short.
Moreover, there’s a fresh perspective for discussing Star Wars and Star Trek. We can engage in lively debates about which series offers superior LEGO construction kits now.
