Even though experts predict strong sales, director James Cameron is a little worried about how well the movie will do in theaters. He recently discussed these concerns on the podcast ‘The Town with Matthew Belloni,’ explaining that it’s a challenging period for the movie theater industry.

Cameron noted that currently, about 75% of the people who attended movies before the pandemic are now going back to theaters. He also mentioned that streaming services have altered viewing habits.

Cameron playfully mentioned that audiences can get tired of sequels, quickly losing interest unless they’re really invested in the story. He noted that while the third Lord of the Rings movie was an exception, that success isn’t always guaranteed for follow-up films.

The director acknowledged the movie was very expensive, though he didn’t reveal the exact budget. He jokingly said it cost a huge amount of money, and therefore needed to earn twice that amount to be profitable. While he’s confident the film will be successful, he explained the real question is whether it will earn enough to warrant making sequels.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third movie in the Avatar series and was filmed at the same time as The Way of Water in New Zealand. It took years to make, partly because the filmmakers created new technology to capture performances underwater. After several delays, the film is now set to come out in December.

The world of Avatar is more expansive than you think. Check out the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, coming to theaters December 19th.

Plus, Avatar: The Way of Water is returning to cinemas in 3D for a limited one-week engagement starting October 3rd.
