The debut film of the Demon Slayer trilogy, titled “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle,” shattered box office records in Japan, outperforming Hayao Miyazaki’s renowned work, “Spirited Away.
In a notable shift, the long-standing second place in Japan’s cinematic history previously occupied by Studio Ghibli classics has been seized by the swift success of the movie “Infinity Castle.” This film has managed to amass an impressive domestic revenue of $214 million, making it the quickest Japanese production to achieve such a feat.
To date, the animated film “Infinity Castle” has garnered an impressive $272 million globally and boasts an IMDb rating of 8.7. This rating is slightly above that of the acclaimed “Spirited Away,” which currently stands at 8.6 with a worldwide earnings of $360 million. Only 2020’s “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” outperforms it, making “Infinity Castle” a formidable competitor in the eyes of Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki.
The movie featuring Channing Tatum is slated for release in the U.S. this weekend, with an English dubbed version. Sony anticipates a starting weekend revenue of approximately $35 million, but some independent analysts speculate that it might surpass $40 million, as reported by The Wrap. Box Office Pro has gone as far as predicting potential earnings of up to $60 million in the movie’s first weekend.
If Infinity Castle surpasses the $40 million threshold, it will outshine the earnings record held by Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back. This animated film garnered approximately $31 million between Friday and Sunday, and a total of $51 million over its first five days.
The film, with its current box office earnings, is likely to secure a spot among the top 10 most profitable movies of the year. At present, this list is predominantly headed by films such as Ne Zha 2, F1, and Superman.
