Bowie and Connelly’s Fantasy Adventure Still Hits
The 1986 film features a young Jennifer Connelly in the role that launched her career, alongside David Bowie as the captivating Goblin King. The movie centers on Sarah’s journey through a fantastical labyrinth populated by unusual creatures, impressive practical effects, and the incredible puppetry of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
The movie, directed by Jim Henson and executive produced by George Lucas, was celebrated for its combination of puppetry, imaginative storytelling, and original music by David Bowie. While Trevor Jones created the film’s score, Bowie also wrote and performed several songs featured in the movie.
Henson’s Creature Shop at Full Strength
The film is still remembered for its incredible creatures. Brian Froud designed their look, and talented performers like Frank Oz, Brian Henson, and Kevin Clash brought them to life using puppets and other techniques, along with contributions from David Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Karen Prell, Ron Mueck, Shari Weiser, and others.
